Neighbourhood Insider: Ottawa! A Great Place

It's A Dapper Capital. Finding Out About The City From The Insiders

Here's a short tip sheet on getting to know neighbourhoods in Ottawa. This is a great primer for you if you're new to the capital. If you've lived here since the first time Jim Watson was mayor, you may recognize some of the blogs and websites we point to here. Feel free to tweet us with your suggestions and additions @inboxtweets. You can share this list with your out-of-town guests, your business clients, or your besties.

Hello Ottawa

This blog is a mix of the streeter and the street-style log. Hello Ottawa interviews average people on their lives and their view of the city and includes plenty of cool photos.

Ottawa Velo Vogue

This blog focuses on the people you meet in your city, much like Hello Ottawa does, but with a cyclist's focus. The feature photography shows the subject on their bike discussing their lives and their favourite gear. The featured cyclist talks about their favourite bike paths and favourite bakeries and restaurants to stop at post ride.

Love Ottawa

This is a big ol' sloppy kiss to the capital. Photographer Dwayne Brown photographs locals of note on a white backdrop (photographers' cramps visible in every shot) and includes a short post about an event, idea, or city issue. Hey, Dwayne, we at Inbox love Ottawa too. Take our picture?

Lost Ottawa

Old photos with captions that provide historical context, ads from restaurants long gone, aerial pictures of the city before the Transitway was built. This Facebook page is full of gems along with comments from keen-eyed capital lovers who share details and photos from their own collections. This is living, collaborative, social history.

Vanier Now

The east-end neighbourhood is on the rise. This blog documents its long history and the developing cultural appeal that is drawing in more buyers to the housing market.

Robyn in the Hood

This archived CBC Ottawa Morning show covers aspects of Barrhaven that you never knew about, including details about a well-established publication covering the Bollywood scene. The neighbourhood nicknamed "Bore-haven," "BBQ-Haven" and "Far-haven" gets a new lease thanks to these broadcasts. Other episodes cover Manotick and Vanier.
