Euro 2012 made history in the Twittersphere. The tournament generated almost 12 million tweets, and made a new tweets-per-second record for sports in the the final match between Spain and Italy. The top 3 countries tweeted about were: Spain with 873,000 tweets, England with 849,000 and Italy with 716,000. Portugal's Ronaldo was the most tweeted star player, with nearly 270,000 tweets, Itally's Balotelli was second with 213,000, and Spain’s Fernando Torres garnered 188,000 tweets. The Euro's most retweeted post came from NBA star LeBron James—his congratulatory tweet after Spain’s win was retweeted 9,000 times.
